Plot:

When Pastor Joseph Brown (Keith David) unexpectedly falls terminally ill, Jessica “Jesse” Brown (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) returns home to Atlanta during his time of need. Pastor Brown asks his sinner strippin’ daughter to honor his dying wish by taking over for him at Mount Olive Baptist Church. This decision doesn’t go over very well with church leadership or members of the congregation. The Pastors final act was met with resistance and a major lack of support. Even Jesse’s jealous older sister, Tonya Brown (Nicole Ari Parker) couldn’t believe that her father didn’t pick her for this position, or the overly ambitious Associate Pastor, Avery Callagan (Michael Beach). Although they’ve asked Jesse to respectfully decline the position, she shocks them all by honoring her father’s final wishes. This journey causes Jesse to face her demons, earn forgiveness, find self-love, regain her dignity, and ultimately accept responsibility for her actions. Jesse finally knows where to find her shoes and makes amends with her family and teenage son, Tariq (Michael B. Jordan), during her quest to lead the congregation of Mount Olive Baptist Church.

For all you folks on the Tyler Perry Express…this is a film for you. While Tyler did help open the doors for main stream production for semi-religious based films, he’s not the only one out there who knows how to create the perfect balance of story telling combined with the word of God. Rhonda Baraka has written herself a masterpiece, and Rockmond Dunbar did his thang directing it! Although “Pastor Brown’s” storyline does center around the church, I found this film to be uplifting without making me feel overly religious or like a super sinner. In fact, it wasn’t until the last 10 minutes of the movie that I found myself beginning to feel as though I were actually sitting in churches pulpit. But by that time I was more than ready to hear Jesse preach, preach, preach!!… and let me tell you that she was awesome!!! I thought “Pastor Brown” was entertaining, funny, uplifting, and most of all REAL. I highly recommend going out to see this movie in the theater. It's worth the full price of admission and certainly worth adding to your DVD collection. ~Dana Da Designated Hata®, Nobody’s Fan™
